Are you a piano student? Whether you’re a beginner or aiming to refine your artistry, follow our 8-step guide towards practicing piano, designed to elevate your practice routine, support maximum progress, and to quickly lead you towards achieving all of your musical goals.

1. Get rid of distractions

Get rid of that computer, tv, ipad, phone, food, or anything else that may distract you. Create a quiet, focused, and organized place for you to practice in.

2. Set goals

Before you begin to play, make a game plan! Set realistic & specific goals for each practice session like: How long you will practice for? Which sections of a song should I focus on? What tempo will I practice this song in?

3. Prepare your practicing tools

Take out all your practicing essentials such as a pencil, eraser, highlighter, timer, and metronome. When you have everything laid out neatly in front of you, you are more likely to have a successful practice session.

4. Adjust your bench height and distance

To develop excellent techniques and good habits, always find the right height and distance of your bench to your piano before you begin to play. If your forearms are parallel to the keys, you’re at the right height. If you are not leaning forwards or backwards when your arms are stretched out in front of you to touch the fall board, you’re at the right distance.

5. Check your sitting and hand posture

Check yourself! Are you sitting up tall yet relaxed near the end of your seat? Are your feet planted on the ground or on a stepping stool? Are your hands curved so that your fingertips are touching the keys? Be sure to check your sitting & hand posture periodically.

6. Practice, practice, practice!

Now practice your heart out. Practice with intention & lots of focus.

7. Reflect

Reflect on your achievements & weaknesses. Did you meet your goals? What do you need to work on for next time? Any changes to be made?

8. Plan ahead

Plan for your next practice session. Try to keep it close so you don’t forget what you worked on & waste all the effort you just put into practicing.
